Habitat: Slight south-facing slope. Coastal sage scrub. Associates: Salvia mellifera, Baccharis sarothroides, Artemisia californica, Malosma laurina, Rhus integrifolia.
Substrate: Hard, red clay soil, with scattered boulders.
Description: Succulent shrub, 5 shoots from base, ca. 50 cm tall. Spines reddish, ribs ca. 4 cm deep, 18 ribs in largest shoot. Tepals yellow with maroon midrib. Anthers, stigmas yellow.
