Habitat: 20-30 m up from base of moderately steep canyon slope. Clay mixed with gravel. Slope north facing, partly shaded. Mixed open sage shrub; Ceanothus tomentosus - Rhamnus crocea - Malosma laurinus - Artemisia californica and non-native herbaceous layer.
Description: Perennial woody shrub, ca. 5-6 ft. high, with many dense interwoven branches and numerous sharp spiny stems. Leaves glossy green glabrous. Plant not in flower.
